SOLEX College Opens an After School Program for Kids

SOLEX College Opens an After School Program for Kids

SOLEX College is proud to announce its S.T.E.P. program which offers after school enrichment and tutoring classes for children ages 8-18. Subjects offered include math skills (all areas and levels), writing skills, and college test preparation.

S.T.E.P. stands for support, tutoring, enrichment philosophy and is designed to meet the varied learning goals of students. Some children are bored with their classes because they are more advanced than the rest of their class and need more stimulation. Some children are behind, and need extra work and more personal attention to help them succeed. Whatever the learning need, the S.T.E.P. program's experienced instructors can design a learning program tailored to the student's individual goals.

Follow the link for more information about the S.T.E.P. after school program.

School Bible Study

Every Wednesday at SOLEX College Pastor John holds a Bible study at 1:45pm. Pastor John is a part of a Christian group out of Maywood, Illinois called The Community. This week marks one year that the Bible study group has been meeting together. It began as a group of English as a Second Language (ESL) students who would get together to speak with native English speakers to practice the language. It evolved into the Bible study last April.

The group kicks off each meeting with a light lunch. By the time the group starts most of the students have been in class all day and have not had a chance to grab something to eat. This allows the students a chance to do that and talk with each other and maybe even meet some new people before they dig in to the lesson. The group is incredibly welcoming to new people. Everybody likes to talk and laugh!

Although anybody is welcome to attend, the Bible Study is mainly made up of ESL students from Korea. Because of this, Pastor John enforces an “English Only” rule. This adds a neat element to the group. It provides a unique way for students to practice and build upon the language skills they are learning in the classroom such as dialogue. The Bible is a complicated and in-depth book. Nearly every word is important. Studying each word can help improve English skills by discussing both synonyms and antonyms. By doing this, a deeper understanding of the Bible is often built. Pastor John brings in his guitar and the group sings songs as part of the study. This gives the group another way to look at the English language and perhaps learn a few new elements of the language.

This Bible study is far from limited to within the walls of SOLEX College. Many involved in the group do not have family in the area and are not entirely familiar with the city of Chicago. Because of this, they take field trips to different parts of the city to see the sights and take public transportation to familiarize those who do not know how to use it.

Pastor John said he likes to keep in contact with students from the group even after they finish their classes and leave the group to return home. “The hardest thing is seeing the students go.”

Fingerprint Background Check for Certified Nursing Assistants

As of this year, the Illinois Department of Public Health requires that all students enrolling in a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program must complete a fingerprint background check.

In the past, a background check not involving fingerprints was acceptable for entrance into a CNA program. So what’s with the change? Well, with the old method a student would more or less have to mail a check to the state or police department. The background check results would be returned a few weeks later. The problem with this method was that the results were not always accurate. Sometimes the returned results were the background of an entirely different person who happened to have the same birthday.

The new fingerprint background check requirement will prevent such confusion. It works like this. A perspective student is required to sign a Background Check Disclosure Form allowing the school to run a background check. Then, within 10 days of that signature, the student must visit one of the select locations doing fingerprints. They are scanned and sent to the state. Birthdays may be duplicated but fingerprints are unique. Problem solved.

But is this change really just about accuracy? Well, no. There is more to it than that. It is not just a new background check method but a new system as well. This new system takes both safety and training into account.

What about those who have completed their education and are currently employed in the healthcare industry? This may vary. Check with your current employer for further details.
