TESOL Certification Program / TEFL

Teaching English as a Second Language

The TESOL Certificate Program is designed to train individuals wishing to enhance teaching skills or make a career in teaching English to speakers of other languages. Students should be prepared to step confidently into an ESL/EFL teaching position of their choice by the end of the course.

To be eligible to enter the TESOL Certificate Program, students must have a Bachelor’s degree and demonstrate near-native proficiency in English. Non-native speakers of English must have a score of 88 or higher on the TOEFL ibt.

TEFL, EFL, TESOL, ESOL, TESL, ESL, ELT: WHAT ISTHE DIFFERENCE?

The answer to this question is “not much”. Before we go any further, let’s first take a quick look at what each of these acronyms stand for.

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) is also sometimes referred to as EFL (English as a Foreign Language)

TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is very similar to ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and ESL (English as a Second Language).

ELT (English Language Teaching)

As if all of these acronyms aren’t confusing enough, TESOL also refers to the American professional organization: Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

To make it a little less complicated, these terms basically mean the same thing.

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) involves teaching people, usually in their own countries, who want to use English for business, leisure, travel, etc.

TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) involves teaching immigrants in English-speaking countries.

ELT (English Language Teaching) is a term that can be used to refer to any of the above.
